- 3 units of ‘M-HyGeia 1000’ has a production capacity of 1,000 cubic metres/hour
- Nippon Steel transforming production site from blast furnace to electric furnace
Japan Metal Daily: Mitsubishi Chemical has recently announced that it has received an order for hydrogen production equipment from Nippon Steel. In 2028, delivery will be made to the Yahata area of Kyushu Steel Works (Kitakyushu City).
Nippon Steel is promoting the shift of its iron source process from blast furnaces to electric furnaces in Yahata as part of its decarbonisation efforts. In connection with this process transformation, hydrogen production facilities will be utilised.
Mitsubishi Chemical Industries will deliver three units (three series) of the medium-sized hydrogen production unit “M-HyGeia 1000” (with a production capacity of 1,000 cubic metres per hour). The total capacity is 3,000 cubic metres, capable of filling all about 50 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (with a hydrogen refuelling capacity of 60 cubic metres) in one hour.
Mitsubishi Chemical Machinery also received an order for hydrogen production equipment from Nippon Steel in 2024. At that time, the vehicles delivered were two large machines (two series) with a production capacity of 37,500 cubic metres per hour for demonstration tests of the hydrogen reduction steelmaking method using blast furnace equipment.
Compared to the same group of facilities, this capacity is less than one-twentieth of the current capacity.
