India: Foundry scrap prices remain largely stable w-o-w; Kolkata market edges up on selective buying

  • Tight local supply contributes to Kolkata price hikes
  • Procurement remains need-based amid ample supply

Foundry scrap prices in India remained largely stable w-o-w as of 23 June 2026 across major consuming regions. The market continued to witness balanced demand-supply dynamics, while buyers maintained a cautious procurement strategy focused on immediate requirements. A marginal increase was observed in Kolkata amid selective buying activity and tighter local availability.

Demand from automotive, engineering, and casting units remained steady during the week. However, the absence of aggressive restocking and comfortable inventory positions among consumers limited broader price movements. Adequate scrap generation in most regions further helped maintain market stability.

Regional price commentary

Kolhapur (West India)
Prices remained unchanged w-o-w, with foundry plate scrap (4-8 mm) assessed at INR 38,800/t and CR-busheling scrap at INR 43,800/t. Market participants reported balanced demand and regular scrap inflows, keeping prices stable.

Coimbatore (South India)
Prices held steady, with foundry plate scrap (8-50 mm) at INR 40,800/t and CR-busheling scrap at INR 44,200/t. Availability of quality material remained sufficient to meet demand, while buyers continued to procure on a requirement basis.

Chennai (South India)
Foundry plate scrap (8-50 mm) remained unchanged at INR 38,600/t, while CR-busheling scrap held firm at INR 43,500/t. Market sentiment was stable, supported by adequate supply and moderate buying activity.

Kolkata (East India)
Foundry plate scrap (4-8 mm) increased by INR 100/t w-o-w to INR 39,300/t. The rise was attributed to selective replenishment by foundries and relatively tighter local scrap availability compared with other regions. Despite the increase, overall market activity remained measured.

Outlook

Foundry scrap prices are expected to remain largely stable through the remainder of June, supported by steady demand from casting and engineering sectors. While adequate supply across most regions may limit significant upside, localised shortages of prime-grade scrap could continue to provide support to prices in select markets such as eastern India.
