- Higher base prices weighed on buyer participation initially
- Improved demand supported complete quantity clearance later
Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) Rourkela plant is set to conduct another auction for crude coal tar on 21 May 2026, with a total offered quantity of 10,000 tonnes. The upcoming auction comes amid steady buying interest in the domestic coal tar market following the successful conclusion of the plant’s previous tender in April.
Rourkela Steel Plant had earlier floated a crude coal tar auction on 11 Apr’26. However, the tender failed to attract any bids as market participants considered the offered base price to be on the higher side compared to prevailing trade levels. Owing to limited buyer participation, the auction was initially rescheduled to 17 Apr’26 and was subsequently deferred to 24 Apr’26.
In the auction held on 24 Apr’26, the plant witnessed healthy participation from buyers, resulting in the complete sale of the offered 7,000 tonnes of crude coal tar. The entire quantity was successfully cleared at an average weighted price of INR 52,300/t, indicating improved buyer confidence and stronger procurement interest from downstream consumers.
