Chinese Coal Imports 67% Up in Oct’16 Y-on-Y: Customs

Coking Coal imports into China was significantly high at around 5.16 MnT in Oct’16, according to the data released by General Administration of Customs in that country. The import volume in the said month rose by around 67% as compared with the imports in the corresponding month of the previous year.

However, the import volume in Oct’16 was down by around 7% in comparison with that in Sep’16; but was higher than the monthly average of 4.87 MnT during 2016.

Exhibiting a similar trend, imports of the coal variant in China during the Jan-Oct’16 period were also up by around 23%, at 48.69 MnT, against the same period of 2015, Chinese customs data also shows.

A region-wise analysis for the Jan-Oct’16 period reveals that imports from Australia rose by 11% to 23.50 MnT year-on-year; imports from Mongolia, Indonesia and New Zealand were up by 75%, 118% and 149% to 17.47 MnT, 0.50 MnT and 0.47 MnT respectively.

In contrast, imports from Canada and Russia during the period fell by 3% and 30% to 4.76 MnT and 1.99 MnT respectively.

On the export side, China exported 6.38 MnT of Coking Coal in Oct’16 to the only destination– North Korea. Coking Coal imports from China during the first 10 months of the current year also were higher by around 23%, at 0.93 MnT, in comparison with that in the same period of the preceding year.
