- Taiwanese mills cautious after continuous price hikes earlier

Mysteel Global: Feng Hsin Steel, Taiwan’s largest rebar producer headquartered in Taichung in central Taiwan, has decided to roll over its rebar list prices and local scrap purchase prices for transactions over 27-30 April, according to a company official.
It is the second week that the Taiwanese mini-mill has maintained the two prices to monitor market changes, Mysteel Global notes. This week is a shortened working week in Taiwan because of the Labour Day public holiday on 1 May, Friday.
For business discussions through this Thursday, Feng Hsin’s list price for 13mm-diameter rebar stays at TWD 18,900/tonne (t) ($599/t) exw, the same level as one week before, while the company continues to pay TWD 10,100/t ($320/t) for local HMS 80:20 scrap, also unchanged from a week earlier, the official confirmed.
Although the production costs of Taiwan’s mini-mills stay high with the firm prices of global scrap delivered to the island, Feng Hsin is in no hurry to adjust its rebar list prices and buying prices of local scrap after the continuous hikes from early March through mid-April.
As of 27 April, the price of US-sourced HMS 80:20 scrap was reported at $362/t CFR Taiwan, unchanged from the prior week, which brought an end to the persistent rally since the beginning of this year. On the same day, prices of Japan-origin H2 scrap reached $385/t CFR Taiwan, jumping by $10/t on week, according to a local market source in Taiwan.
Rebar prices in the Chinese mainland have strengthened recently thanks to strong cost support and relatively healthy supply-demand fundamentals. Some end-users entered the market for replenishment ahead of China’s May Day holiday over 1-5 May, boosting construction steel sales in the physical market, Mysteel Global learned.
As of 27 April, China’s national price of HRB400E 20mm rebar — an indicator of the country’s domestic steel-market sentiment — was assessed by Mysteel at RMB 3,397/t ($497/t) including 13% VAT, rising by RMB 29/t on week and marking the highest since 14 August 2025.
