China Coal Imports Down By 12% in Oct’16

China’s monthly coal import to 21.6 MnT in Oct’16. The country recorded its first steep decline in coal imports since Jul’16.

China, the world’s largest coal importer, registered a significant downfall of 12% in its monthly coal import during Oct’16. The country imported about 21.6 MnT of coal in the month with a notable fall of 2.8 MnT compared to Sep’16, according to data from the General Administration of Customs (GAC).

China’s coal imports, including lignite, thermal and metallurgical coal, recorded a rise of 54.6% in Oct’16, compared with Oct’15.

In context to 2016, the first-ten months (Jan’16-Oct’16) of the year, country’s total imports reached to 201.7 MnT with a considerable rise by 18.5% compared to last year with the same period.

China, world largest coal consumer has increased its overseas purchase in 2016. Chinese coal imports boosted to the highest in this year since May’16. Speed of falling domestic coal production in China resulted into supply shortage domestically which directly increase the import requirements. On the other hand carbon emissions and government policies also resulted in sharp rise in coal sourcing this year.
