Anthracite Coal Import Offers Go Up USD 2/MT, Lackluster Market Persists in India

Anthracite Coal prices have been depicting a rising trend as demand strengthened from the key user-industries.

The latest import was learnt to go up by around USD 2/MT to USD 135/MT CFR India. As a matter of fact, import offers have continuously been moving upwards since Sep’16.

Of late, demand for the coal has gone stronger in China, primarily from the fertilizer industry there. The coal is required to produce Nitrogenous fertilizers. According to the latest inputs received, spot Anthracite Coal prices rose to around USD 102.8/MT in China from around USD 100.9/MT, a week back.

In the meantime, Anthracite Coal stocks at thermal power stations in Ukraine rose to 763,000 ton, as stockpiling activity gained momentum to meet the peak demand for power in the winter season.

Also, coal prices in China have come under the influence of rising rail freight in China. Effective from 10 Nov’16, railway transportation rates along most of the routes have gone up by 10% in China.

Anthracite Coal import scenario in India has continued to be grim as buyers in the country preferred alternate fuels. During the 1-10 Nov’16 period, only 41,300 MT of the coal was imported into the country, according to data compiled by CoalMint Research. The importers were: Tata Steel, Jindal Steel and Power Limited, and Indian Metals and Ferro Alloys Limited.
