- 500 mt of rice dispatched as emergency food aid after severe flooding
- India-Mozambique rice trade shows steady demand with fluctuating yearly volumes
India has shipped 500 metric tonnes (mt) of rice to Mozambique following severe flooding that has impacted several central and southern provinces, highlighting the role of staple grain supplies in humanitarian relief operations.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the consignment was delivered aboard a vessel from the Indian Navy as part of India’s Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) framework. The rice shipment is aimed at supporting food availability in flood-affected regions where supply chains and local distribution networks have been disrupted.
Rice is widely used in emergency food aid programmes due to its long shelf life, ease of storage, and strong consumption base across African markets. India, the world’s largest rice exporter, frequently mobilises bulk grain cargo for humanitarian support across the Indian Ocean region.
India-Mozambique rice trade trends
Trade data shows India’s rice exports to Mozambique have fluctuated in recent years. Shipments rose from 0.21 million tonnes (MnT) in FY2023 to 0.38 MnT in FY2024, reflecting a sharp year-on-year increase of about 81% driven by stronger East African demand.Exports declined slightly to 0.34 MnT in FY2025, marking a 10% y-o-y drop, before recovering to 0.38 MnT in FY2026, representing a 12% y-o-y increase, according to the data maintained by BigMint. The trend indicates Mozambique remains a stable destination for Indian rice exports despite short-term fluctuations in trade volumes.
Relief supplies complement food shipments
Alongside the rice cargo, India dispatched 10 mt of essential relief materials, including tents, hygiene kits and rehabilitation items, along with three tonnes of critical medicines. Additionally, 86 mt of life-saving medicines had already been delivered earlier via the sea route as part of the broader relief effort.
