West Africa rice prices ease slightly on currency adjustment d-o-d

  • Local prices largely unchanged across Benin, Niger and Burkina Faso
  • USD/MT equivalents adjust as CFA franc (XOF) continues to fluctuate

Domestic rice prices across West Africa showed marginal day-on-day softening in USD terms, while underlying prices in CFA franc (XOF) remained largely stable, reflecting balanced supply conditions.

Benin: Indian parboiled rice held steady at $532 per tonne on March 3, unchanged from the previous day. White rice eased to $547 from $551, while double polished rice slipped to $582 from $586. The white rice segment traded in a range of $547–$551, while double polish was assessed at $582-$586 over the two sessions, indicating limited volatility.

Niger: White rice declined to $549 from $553, while double polished rice fell to $599 from $604. The assessed ranges stood at $549–$553 for white rice and $599-$604 for double polish, pointing to minor corrections rather than structural demand shifts. Market feedback suggests steady cross-border flows and consistent retail offtake.

Burkina Faso: Indian parboiled (bulk) edged down to $576 from $580, with the day-on-day range at $576-$580.

Overall, the price movements were modest and primarily linked to fluctuations in the CFA franc (XOF), which continues to influence USD conversions. Primary market transactions remain denominated in XOF, and actual trade levels may vary depending on inland logistics and local distribution costs.
