Guinea: Rio Tinto halts operations at its Simandou mine after fatal incident

Rio Tinto suspended operations at its Simandou iron ore project in Guinea after a fatal accident occurred on 14 Feb’26. Simandou is one of the world’s largest high-grade undeveloped iron ore deposits, and Rio Tinto, which manages blocks 3 and 4, targets about 6 mnt of shipments in 2026 and 60 mn t/yr by 2028, supported by new rail and port infrastructure.
