Russia’s coal export recorded 82% growth in Aug’16. While yearly exports also rise by 28% during the month.
Russia, one of the largest coal exporters in the globe, shipped about 17.3 MnT coal to the different destinations in Aug’16. The country’s exports surged by 82% on monthly basis. While, yearly imports rose by 28% which was at 13.5 MnT in Aug’15. As per to Russian customs data.
Grade-wise coal export in Aug’16
Out of the total exported quantity, more than 70% Bituminous coal shipped by the country every month and rest includes Coking, Anthracite, Coke and other grades.

Quantity in MnT
In first eight months (Jan’16-Aug’16) of 2016, country’s export has also rose by 11% to 108.7 MnT which was at 98.3 MnT in 2015 (Jan’15-Aug’15). Besides, the Russian government is also planning to increase its coal production quantity and exports by 10 MnT respectively.
The country has been exporting more than 40% coal of its total yearly production. In 2015, the country had shipped about 155.6 MnT coal worldwide. Meanwhile, Russian coal output has been rising every year and reached at 373 MnT, which was at 358 MnT in 2014.
Major Export Destinations.
Countries like Korea, Japan, China, Ukraine and Turkey are the largest taker of Russian coal. Whilst, in the month of Aug’16 they were imported large quantity from the country.
Korea, largest importer of Russian coal, took about 2.9 MnT coal in Aug’16; up by 75% compared to last month. While, yearly import rose by 52%, which was 1.9 MnT in Aug’15.
Japan, the second-largest coal importer during the month, imported about 2.1 MnT coal in Aug’16, with a sharp rise of more than 100%, compared to 0.96 MnT in Jul’16. The nation’s yearly import also noted a growth of 4%, which was 2 MnT in Aug’15.
China, the third-largest importer of Russian coal in Aug’16, imported about 1.67 MnT coal during the month, recorded a significantly growth of more than 100% in shipments. Country’s import was 0.83 MnT in Jul’16, also import rose by 82% Y-o-Y.
