BigMint’s domestic end-cutting scrap index, tracking the Mandi Gobindgarh market, remained unchanged d-o-d at INR 37,000/tonne (t) DAP on 13 Jan’2026.
In Mandi Gobindgarh, the local steel market saw subdued activity in the first half of the trading session, with the second half closed due to the Lohri festival. Demand for steel remained limited overall.
Domestic steel scrap arrivals remained high in the region, prompting suppliers to lower price levels. Buyers are also demanding further discounts on offered prices in Mandi Gobindgarh.
Alternative raw material prices
In the raw material segment, sponge iron (CDRI) prices in Mandi Gobindgarh fell by INR 50/t to INR 29,250/t DAP, while steel-grade pig iron prices in Ludhiana rose by INR 150/t to INR 39,200/t DAP.
Steel market
Semi-finished steel (ingot) prices in Mandi Gobindgarh decreased by INR 100/t day-on-day to INR 42,400/t DAP, while other key production hubs saw declines of INR 100-200/t in today’s trading.
Rebar (Fe500) prices in Mandi Gobindgarh fell by INR 100/t day-on-day to INR 47,100/t ex-works. Meanwhile, HR strip (patra) prices dipped by INR 100/t to INR 43,100/t ex-works.
Overview of Alang market
Alang ship-breaking scrap prices dipped INR 200/t d-o-d on 13 Jan’26, with BigMint’s HMS (80:20) assessment at INR 31,300/t ex-yard. Weak demand from local buyers ahead of Uttrayan (Makar Sankranti) subdued the regional steel market, leading suppliers to trim their prices.

End-cutting to billet spread: In Mandi, the spread between end-cutting scrap and billets stood in the range of INR 5,100-5,600/t
Domestic vs imported scrap: Imported melting scrap prices at Nhava Sheva Port were assessed at $325-$326/t, approximately INR 31,711/t (inclusive of freight). HMS (80:20) in Mumbai inched up by INR 100/t to INR 31,700/t DAP. Indicative prices of shredded from Europe stood at $353/t CFR Nhava Sheva.
Raipur sponge iron-billet spread: The conversion spread (margin) between pellet-based DRI (P-DRI) and steel billets in Raipur stood at INR 15,900/t.
