India’s fuel consumption hits record high in Dec’25 as robust economic activity drives energy demand

  • Fuel demand at record high signals robust economic activity
  • Hydrocarbon dependence remains structurally strong

India’s fuel consumption reached an all-time high in December 2025, reflecting robust economic activity and elevated energy use across key sectors. According to data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC), total fuel sales in December surged to 21.75 million tons (mnt), registering a 5.3% annual increase and marking the highest monthly demand since records began in April 1998.

Diesel, petrol and LPG drive growth

The December demand spike was broad-based:

  • Diesel consumption reached 8.46 mnt, up about 5% from a year earlier, although slightly down compared with November
  • Petrol (gasoline) sales rose to 3.56 mnt, reflecting a 7.1% y-o-y increase
  • LPG consumption climbed strongly by more than 11% to 3.08 mnt
  • Naphtha saw a slight decline, while bitumen and fuel oil usage also increased on an annual basis

These figures point to sustained mobility and industrial demand, with diesel – a key transport and logistics fuel – continuing to underline activity in trucking, freight, and commercial segments.

Energy demand reflects broader economic momentum

Record fuel consumption in December aligns with other indicators of strong economic momentum. Power demand in India also rose sharply in December – up nearly 7% y-o-y as cold weather drove heating and electricity use across the northern states, reaching about 138.4 billion units.

Consumer purchases such as vehicle sales have also accelerated, supported by tax cuts and heightened demand late in the year.

The sustained uptick in fuel usage complements signs of buoyant economic sentiment and activity reported at the start of 2026. Data from various sectors – including auto sales, GST collections, and industrial output – shows a strong start to the year, reinforcing the narrative of robust domestic demand.

Global and geopolitical context

India’s fuel demand gains come amid shifting global energy dynamics. The country remains a major importer of crude oil, including discounted Russian seaborne crude – a position that has drawn diplomatic and trade scrutiny from the United States, which has threatened tariff actions over India’s purchasing choices.

Interpretation

The record December fuel demand reflects both cyclical and structural trends:

  • Economic activity – logistics, industry, and transport – appears to be strengthening
  • Household consumption patterns – particularly during the holiday and winter season – boosted petrol and LPG use
  • Power and industrial demand contributed to broad energy usage increases

Taken together, the December fuel consumption report underscores that India’s energy demand remains resilient at scale, supporting growth while highlighting the continued importance of hydrocarbon fuels even as the country accelerates its transition toward renewables and cleaner energy sources.
