Global shipping industry’s decarbonisation efforts face delay

The global shipping industry’s path to net-zero is at risk, stalled by a lack of consensus over a landmark regulatory framework proposed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). In October 2025, the adoption of the IMO’s Net-Zero Framework (NZF), which aimed to achieve carbon neutrality in maritime transport by 2050, was postponed, with a majority of member-states voting to adjourn discussions for one year.
