Bangladesh, an emerging steel market, has a huge demand for scrap, sponge (DRI) and Pig iron as these are the major raw materials for steel smelting units in Bangladesh.
In Sept’16, the country imported 33,750 MT Pig iron from India and 50,000 MT HBI from Russia. The country imported 20,000 MT Pig iron from India and 46,700 MT HBI from Russia in Aug’16.
Indian Pig iron exporters are also exploring opportunities for Pig iron export to Bangladesh. Starting Bangladesh FY16 to Sep’16 , India becomes the largest Pig iron exporter to Bangladesh and exported 45% of Pig iron.
Shipment from India will have a voyage time of 3-7 days whereas CIS region Pig iron will be delivered in 20-25 days.
In Bangladesh FY16, the country imported 114,300 MT Pig iron (18% from India and rest from others).
