Coal Ministry Asks Environment Ministry to Hasten Clearance for New Coal Washeries

In an effort to provide quality coal to customers, the Coal Ministry has asked the Ministry of Environment and Forests to hasten the process of granting environmental clearance to the new coal washeries to be set up by Coal India Limited (CIL).

CIL is in the process of setting up 15 coal washeries, which are planned to be made operational by Sep’17.

Coal washing is a process of removing impurities, like sand, stone and shale, from coal, without any change in the physical properties.

India hitherto has 15 coal washeries, with a cumulative capacity of 38 MnT.
