Tata steel strengthens India growth strategy with new capacity additions and strategic collaborations

  • 4.8 MTPA NINL expansion accelerates construction retail growth
  • 1 MTPA HIsarna demo pioneers coke-free sustainable steelmaking

Tata Steel has outlined a strengthened long-term growth strategy for its India business, with the Board approving a series of capacity expansions, downstream investments, raw-material integration measures, and advancements in low-carbon steelmaking technologies. The roadmap aligns with the company’s focus on disciplined capital allocation and scaling profitable domestic operations.

Key developments

A key decision includes the in-principle approval for a 4.8 MTPA Phase 1 capacity expansion at Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited (NINL). This addition will significantly enhance Tata Steel’s long-products portfolio, enabling deeper penetration into India’s fast-growing retail and construction segments.

To bolster flat-steel capabilities, the Board has cleared funds to commence design and engineering work for a 2.5 MTPA Thin Slab Caster and Rolling facility at Meramandali, advancing regulatory approvals in parallel. The project will expand thin-gauge finished steel capacity, supporting automotive and engineering customers and reducing import reliance.

In downstream operations, Tata Steel will set up a 0.7 MTPA Hot Rolled Pickling and Galvanizing Line (HRPGL) at Tarapur, Maharashtra. As India’s first such facility, the HRPGL will strengthen the company’s coated steel offerings following the consolidation of Tata Steel BlueScope and improve supply to automotive OEMs.

To enhance resource security, Tata Steel has signed an MoU with Lloyds Metals & Energy Ltd (LMEL) to collaborate on mining, logistics, pellets, and steelmaking in Gadchiroli, including exploration of a 6 MTPA greenfield steel plant and joint development of regional iron-ore assets.

Further, Tata Steel has signed definitive agreements to acquire 50.01% of Thriveni Pellets Pvt Ltd (TPPL), gaining access to a 4 MTPA pellet plant and a 212-km slurry pipeline in Odisha, reinforcing raw-material integration.

The Board has also approved engineering and regulatory steps toward a 1 MTPA HIsarna low-carbon demonstration plant in Jamshedpur, leveraging Tata Steel’s global IJmuiden Pilot (IP) owned technology that eliminates coke usage and supports sustainable ironmaking.

Outlook

The announcements collectively signal a decisive acceleration in Tata Steel’s India-focused growth strategy. With multiple greenfield and brownfield investments underway across upstream and downstream operations, the company is positioning itself for expanded domestic market leadership, improved value-chain integration and early-mover advantage in sustainable steelmaking technologies.
