- India transitioning to tech-driven, diversified coal exploration model
- Move expected to boost domestic reserves, cut import dependence
The Government of India has formally accredited 18 private entities to conduct coal and lignite prospecting operations, signalling a deliberate expansion of private participation in mineral exploration. The notification, issued on 26 November 2025, under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, empowers these agencies to undertake exploration activities across designated regions.
Accredited agencies, geographic coverage
The notification lists 18 private organisations spanning key mining hubs such as West Bengal, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Haryana, and Tamil Nadu, reflecting a geographically distributed exploration network conducive to national-level resource mapping. Notable entities include:
- Indian Mine Planners & Consultants, Kolkata
- Matrix Mining Solutions, Gurgaon
- Tata Steel’s Natural Resources Division, East Singhbhum
- South West Pinnacle Exploration Ltd., Haryana
- GMMCO Technology Services, Hyderabad
- APC Drilling & Construction Pvt. Ltd., Tamil Nadu
Each firm has been assigned a unique organisational code and accreditation certificate, ensuring traceability and accountability in exploration operations.

Validity, compliance requirements
The accreditation remains valid for a period of three years from the date of publication or until the respective certification expires, whichever occurs earlier. This provision enables periodic evaluation of technical standards, environmental compliance, and performance benchmarks, ensuring accountability throughout the exploration cycle.
Implications for India’s coal strategy
The accreditation initiative is expected to accelerate reserve discovery by expanding exploration capacity, reducing dependence on imported thermal coal through greater domestic sourcing, promoting the adoption of advanced geological technologies, and fostering a more competitive and efficient mineral services ecosystem.
