Coal Ministry Raises Cap on Coal Sales by State Nominated Agencies to 10,000 TPA

The Coal Ministry has amended the National Coal Distribution Policy, which was formulated in 2007, by raising the annual limit on coal sales by Coal India Limited (CIL) through the state nominated agencies to 10,000 ton per annum from 4,200 ton per annum.

In the latest amendment, the ministry had amended the phrase—“small and medium sector” to “small, medium and others”—meaning that the coal supply will also be available to even small consumers, with consumption less than 4,200 ton per annum.

The coal sales are permitted for both CIL and Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL). Besides, the move is seen by some as an effort to improve the ease of doing business in India.
