CIL Asks Mozambique Govt for Alternate Coal Blocks

Coal India Limited (CIL) has in fact kept its Mozambique option intact, although it was learnt that the state-run miner considered giving up the option to acquire coal blocks in that country.

In a recent development, it is learnt that CIL has requested the Mozambique government to allocate alternate coal blocks in place of the two blocks allocated in 2009, covering a 224 square km area at the Tete province in that country.

Eventually, CIL had to surrender the coal blocks to that government after discovering that out of the 224 square km of the licence area, 170 square km has no coal till a depth of 500 meter. However, the rest 54 square km of the area was retained by CIL, for which the mining licence validity period was extended upto 2019.
