China’s monthly coal import to 26.6 MnT in Aug’16. Besides, country’s yearly coal imports registered a sharp rise by 52% in the month.
China, the world’s largest coal importer, registered a significant rise of more than 25% in its monthly coal import during Aug’16. The country imported about 26.6 MnT of coal in the month with a notable rise of 5.4 MnT compared to Jul’16, according to data from the General Administration of Customs (GAC).
China, world largest coal consumer has increased its overseas purchase in 2016. Chinese coal imports boosted to the highest in this year since May’16. Speed of falling domestic coal production in China resulted into supply shortage domestically which increased the imports requirement of the country. On the other hand carbon emissions and government policies also resulted into sharp rise in coal sourcing this year.

China’s coal imports, including lignite, thermal and metallurgical coal, recorded a rise of 52% in Aug’16, compared with Aug’15.
In context to 2016, the first-eight months (Jan’16-Aug’16) of the year, country’s total imports reached to 155.7 MnT with a considerable rise by 12.4% compared to last year with the same period.
