Nepal: Rebar prices fall $21/t m-o-m in Sep’25 due to extended monsoon, festive lull

Rebar prices in Nepal prices declined by NPR 3,000/t ($21/t) m-o-m in September 2025, falling to NPR 72,500-74,500/t ($510-524/t) for cash guarantee sales and NPR 74,500-76,500/t ($524-538/t) for bank guarantee sales.

The drop was mainly driven by sluggish demand due to an extended monsoon and festive season, compounded by political disturbances that affected market activity.

Nepal’s rebar prices rose by NPR 1,200/t ($8/t) w-o-w in October to NPR 73,500-76,500/t ($517-538/t) for cash guarantee sales and NPR 75,500-78,500/t ($531-552/t) for bank guarantee sales, supported by expectations of improved demand after the festive season. Wire rod (IF-EAF) offers, however, fell by $10/t w-o-w to $468/t CNF Raxaul.

Imported long steel, sponge iron offers

Offers for imported Indian wire rod coils (WRCs) via the EAF/IF route dropped by $15/t m-o-m to $470-480/t exw-Durgapur.

India’s sponge iron export offers to Nepal also slipped by $1/t m-o-m to $331/t CPT Raxaul amid weak buying interest.

Product-wise import volumes

Finished flat steel imports climbed 18% m-o-m to 10,400 t in September, up from 9,400 t in August, and surged 58% y-o-y from 6,600 t in September 2024.

Semi-finished steel imports increased by 11% in September to 10,400 t, as against 9,400 t in the previous month. Furthermore, semis imports increased by 58% from 6,600 t in September 2024.

Finished long steel imports rose 46% m-o-m to 18,600 t in September from 12,700 t in August. However, on a y-o-y basis, imports fell 19% compared with 23,100 t in September 2024.

Outlook

Prices are expected to gain momentum in the near term, supported by a post-festive recovery in buying interest and improved demand.
