  • Mine capacity is around 0.2 mnt/year
  • 125 mines auctioned under commercial auctions

Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, along with Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Pema Khandu, inaugurated the Namchik Namphuk coal mine in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh on 6 October 2025, marking a historic milestone as the state’s first commercial coal mining project. The mine positions Arunachal Pradesh on India’s coal and energy map.

The fully explored mine, with geologic reserves of around 15 millon tonnes (mnt), was auctioned under the 13th Tranche of the Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Act, 2015 (CMSP), and 3rd tranche of MMDR Act on 12 October, 2021. The mine has a peak rated capacity (PRC) of 0.2 mnt per annum and was won by Coal Pulz Pvt. Ltd., a subsidiary of the Assam-based Mahalaxmi Group.

India’s coal production already crossed the milestone of over 1 billion tonnes (bnt) in FY’25 and, as per Ministry of Coal, since the inception of commercial coal mining in 2020 the Ministry of Coal has successfully auctioned a total of 125 coal mines, with a combined production capacity of 273.06 mnt per annum.

Mahalaxmi Group

Mahalaxmi Group, one of India’s largest coal traders, is a leading importer of South African, Indonesian, Australian and US coals besides other sources. It also imports coking coal from Australia, mainly prime to semi-prime grades. Clients are served either at the discharge port or the coal is directly sent to customers by barge, rail cars, or road transport.

With Namchik Namphuk, the Group is making a foray into coal mining. Mahalaxmi has also expanded its presence in coke manufacturing and exports. The Group currently owns four coke manufacturing units in India, with combined capacity of 0.2 mnt.

The company is also engaged in coke oven gas tapping for power generation, with combined capacity assessed at 24 MW. By recovering waste gas and utilising it for power generation, the company ensures alleviation of GHG emissions.
