WTO supports Indonesia in stainless steel tariff dispute with EU

  • EU urged to remove unlawful duties on Indonesia
  • Indonesia filed WTO complaint in Feb’23

The World Trade Organization (WTO) panel has ruled in favour of Indonesia in its dispute over anti-dumping and countervailing duties imposed by the European Union (EU) on Indonesian stainless steel exports. The ruling confirms Indonesia’s right to fair access to the EU market, marking a major development in trade relations.

The EU currently applies anti-dumping duties ranging from 9.3% to 20.2%, alongside countervailing duties up to 21.4%. Indonesia lodged a complaint with the WTO in February 2023, challenging these trade restrictions as inconsistent with WTO agreements.

Following the WTO’s decision, the EU has been urged to revise its measures by immediately removing the unlawful countervailing duties on Indonesian stainless steel products. This move is expected to improve Indonesia’s export prospects significantly.

Indonesia is monitoring the implementation of the ruling to ensure full compliance, aiming to strengthen its position in the international stainless steel market and secure lasting trade fairness.
