India’s total monthly coal import witnessed a downfall of 7% at 17.7 MnT in Aug’16. Besides, Pet coke import recorded a steep rise of 28% during the month.
India, the 2nd largest dry fuel importer across the globe, has mark the lowest coal imports of the year in Aug’16. The imports had attained with a downfall of 7% in Aug’16 compared with last month. Indian coal imports have been falling since Jul’16 owing to strong monsoon season which resulted into slow trade in India.
In Aug’16, the country has imported about 17.7 MnT coal (pet coke included) with a notable fall of 1.4 MnT compared to Jul’16. In addition, total yearly coal imports also dropped marginally by 1.3% from 17.9 MnT in Aug’15.
As per SteelMint’s data analysis, out of the total imports, the country imported 11.5 MnT non-coking coal, 3.7 MnT coking coal and about 0.6 MnT coke & anthracite in Aug’16. While, 1.8 MnT Pet coke (up by 28%) imported was majorly supplied by USA and Saudi Arabia.

Quantity in MnT
The consecutive fall in India’s coal imports since couple of months was a result of falling demand of coal during monsoon. It has been noted that, sharp growth in international coal market which have gone up by 20-30%, have restricted buyers to opt for imported material. On the other side, India use to follow a down trend in the month of August every year owing to seasonal effect.

Indonesia, the biggest conventional source of the country, supplied about 8 MnT of coal, registered a downfall of 10% against Jul’16. Moreover, India purchases most of its coal from countries such as Indonesia, Australia, South Africa, USA, Russia and Saudi Arabia.

Major discharging ports and importers in Aug’16
Mundra, India’s biggest Port in dry fuel handling, received the highest volume of 2.9 MnT with a growth of 32% in Aug’16. Other ports of the country namely Krishnapatnam, Kandla and Paradip, received 1.8 MnT, 1.5 MnT and 1.2 MnT coal respectively.

Quantity in MnT
Indian companies like Adani Power, JSW Steel, Adani Enterprises, CGPL, SAIL, Tata Steel, Agarwal Coal and Cement imported large quantities of about 1.9 MnT, 1.8 MnT, 1.7 MnT, 1 MnT, 0.9 MnT, 0.8 MnT, 0.6 MnT and 0.6 MnT respectively in Aug’16.
