South African monthly coal export fell by 8% in Jul’16 compared to last month. Also, monthly coal export quantity hit the lowest since Mar’16.
South Africa, one of the largest thermal coal exporters in the globe, shipped about 4.9 MnT of coal to the different destinations in Jul’16. The monthly coal export down by 8% compared to Jun’16 and also record a significant fall of 34% compared to Jul’15.

Out of the total exported quantity, more than 90% Bituminous coal shipped by the country every month and rest includes Anthracite, Coke and other grades.

Quantity in MnT
South African coal shipments have been reducing since couple of months and hit the lowest since Mar’16. South African coal export fell due to constantly rising FoB offers, which recorded highest since Dec’14. Current offers for 6000 NAR thermal coal are reached at USD 65-66/MT, FoB for Sep’16 shipments.
However, India’s slowing demand in monsoon also strongly affected South African coal trade in Jul’16. Constantly, rising South African index is deterring global buyers’ interest.

In the 1st seven month of the year, the country exported 40.9 MnT coal with a significant fall of 9%, which was 44.8 MnT in the same consecutive period last year.

Country-wise coal export in Jul’16
India is one of the largest buyers of South African thermal coal as the country’s whole sponge industry is largely dependent on South African coal. Out of the total export in the year, the country shipped about 60% of coal to India.
India imported the largest coal quantity, followed by Italy and Netherland as the 2nd and 3rd largest importers in Jul’16.

Quantity in MnT
India, largest consumer of South African grades, took about 2.4 MnT coal in Jul’16; down by 15% compared to last month. While, yearly import fell by 31%, which was 2.43 MnT in Jul’15.
Italy, the second-largest coal importer during the month, imported about 0.41 MnT coal in Jul’16, with a significant growth which is more than 100%, compared to 0.14 MnT in Jun’16. The nation’s yearly import also recorded a nominal growth of 8%, which was 0.38 MnT in Jul’15.
Netherland, the third-largest importer of South African coal in Jul’16, imported about 0.32 MnT coal during the month, recorded a significantly rise in shipments as the country’s import was nil in Jun’16. While, import moved up by 24% Y-o-Y.
