- Exports to India rise by 5% y-o-y but plunge by 45% m-o-m
- Indian mills seek higher low-ash met coke import quotas
Mysteel Global: Indonesia exported a total of 494,980 tonnes (t) of coke in July, including both metallurgical coke and semi-coke, up 13.8% y-o-y but down sharply by 25% from June, according to data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS).
Coke shipments to India, the top destination, reached 131,000 t in July, up 4.6% y-o-y but down substantially by 44.9% m-o-m, the BPS data showed.
Indian steelmakers requested the government to sharply raise import quotas for low-ash met coke to 9.3 million tonnes (mnt), from the government-approved 1.4 mnt over the July-December period, Reuters reported.
According to the steelmakers’ proposal, the bulk of expanded tonnage should be allocated to Indonesia and should total 2.6 mnt, far exceeding the government’s current allocation of around 66,000 t, the report said.
In June, India extended the policy of low-ash met coke import quotas to 1.4 mnt in total for the second half of this year,
India’s major steelmakers, such as JSW Steel and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India, said the coke import restriction has hindered their expansion plans, as they have difficulty sourcing the right coke grades locally.
Meanwhile, in July, Brazil emerged as the second-largest destination for Indonesia’s coke exports, with shipments reaching 101,367 t, virtually flat y-o-y but up 93.8% from June. Brazil is a relatively new market for Indonesia’s coke industry, as the BPS data showed no shipments prior to February 2024. Exports stabilised at 50,000-100,000 t/month through the first seven months of 2025, compared with 2024 when no cargoes were recorded in January, March, April, June, or August, Mysteel Global notes.
By value in July, Indonesia’s coke exports worldwide totalled $90.76 million, lower by 27.3% y-o-y and 31.7% m-o-m, the BPS data showed. Based on the volume and value, export prices averaged $183.37/t that month, down 36.1% y-o-y and 9% m-o-m, and marking the lowest since July 2022, according to Mysteel Global’s calculations.
From January to July, Indonesia’s cumulative coke exports amounted to 3.72 mnt, soaring 51.6% from a year earlier. The exports were valued at $786.76 million, only a 4.8% rise, as the average unit price nosedived by 32% over the seven months, Mysteel Global notes.
All of Indonesia’s coke exports during January-July sailed from the Bahodopi Port in Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi, according to the BPS. The port mainly handles coke cargoes from the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park, a major industrial zone in the region.
