Coking Coal Imports into India Likely to Touch 180 MnT by 2025

A perspective based on pure economics indicates that Coking coal imports in India could touch the 180 MnT mark by 2025, when crude steel production in the country is expected to rise to 300 MnT/annum.

Constrained by domestic supply inadequacy, Indian steel makers have to procure the coal variant from overseas, mainly from Australia. At the same time, increasing steel production in the country has led to the imports going up.

The available data reveals that imports of the coal variant have gone up successively in the last fiscals, and the import trend is expected to maintain the upward trend in the future.

Fiscal Import Quantity (in MnT)
FY16 47.7
FY15 45.4
FY14 39.6

Consumption of Coking coal will rise further in the country after the ongoing capacity expansion projects undertaken by steel companies in the country go on-stream.

Intervening into the matter of increasing Coking coal imports, the Steel Ministry has recently approached the Coal Ministry asking to allocate exclusive Coking coal blocks to the country’s steel makers.
