- Dispatches increase 8% y-o-y in Aug’25
- Production declines 3% y-o-y in Apr-Aug
Coal India Limited (CIL), a Maharatna public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Coal, has released its provisional coal production and offtake figures for August 2025, along with consolidated data for the April-August 2025 period. The figures reflect a y-o-y rise in both coal production and dispatch volumes in August 2025, despite a decline in cumulative April-August volumes.
Aug’25 sees 9% rise in output
In August 2025, CIL recorded a total coal production of 50.4 million tonnes (mnt), marking a moderate increase of 9.4% from 46.1 mnt in August 2024. Among its subsidiaries, Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) contributed the highest production at 15.8 mnt, registering a slight 0.2% y-o-y rise.
Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) followed, with 11.3 mnt, reflecting a significant 33.1% rise, while South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) produced 11 mnt, up by 29.8% from August last year.
Production drops 3.5% in Apr-Aug’25
For the first five months of FY’26 (April-August), CIL’s total coal production stood at 280.2 mnt, declining by 3.5% from 290.4 mnt in the corresponding period. This trend indicates persistent pressures across mining operations, including weather disruptions and supply chain constraints.
Dispatches also show increase in Aug’25
CIL’s coal offtake in August 2025 was at 56.7 mnt, a significant 7.6% y-o-y rise from 52.7 mnt in August 2024. MCL once again led the dispatch figures, with 17.8 mnt, a 6.5% rise y-o-y. It was followed by SECL, where dispatch figures stood at 12.8 mnt, up 22.7% y-o-y. Additionally, NCL recorded an offtake of 11.2 mnt, showing a 25.9% rise compared to the same month last year.
Apr-Aug’25 offtake declines 3.3% y-o-y
CIL reported a total offtake of 301.9 mnt during Apr-Aug’25, reflecting a 3.3% decline from 312.1 mnt in the corresponding period of the previous year. The reduction was largely attributed to subdued demand from the power sector, supported by adequate plant inventories, along with weaker industrial consumption.
Outlook
Coal India’s August performance signals a strong recovery in monthly output and dispatches, though April-August figures remain below last year’s. Sustained monsoon disruptions and supply chain hurdles may challenge consistency, but improved subsidiary contributions hint at potential stabilisation ahead.
