- August output estimated at 3.23 mnt, slightly higher
- Duplex production surged 72.2% y-o-y
SteelDaily: China’s crude stainless steel production reached 3.24 million tonnes (mnt) in July 2025, marking a slight decline of 0.4% compared to last month, according to China Iron and Steel Association.
Additionally, production is estimated at 3.23 mnt for August 2025, a 0.6% rise from July but a 3.9% drop compared to August 2024, reflecting the combined effects of routine maintenance shutdowns, production cuts at select mills, and sluggish demand conditions.
Production by series
200 series: Production stood at 0.94 mnt, down by 5% m-o-m in July, meanwhile declined by 2.7% y-o-y.
300-series: Declined by 2% m-o-m to 1.70 mnt in July, and increased by 6.4% y-o-y against July 2024.
400-series: Production remained steady at 0.56 mnt in July 2025, while dropped by 15.6% y-o-y against last year.
Duplex: Duplex stainless steel production surged by 72.2% y-o-y to 35,316 t in July 2025.
On the other hand, China’s exports rose significantly in July, with buyers from Southeast Asia and Europe increasingly turning to Chinese suppliers for cost-effective alternatives. Competitive pricing supported this growth, even as it risked fueling trade tensions with importing countries concerned about local industry protection.
Imports, however, remained relatively subdued compared to exports, as robust domestic production reduced the need for overseas supply. Analysts suggest that continued high production, combined with growing export volumes, could add pressure to global stainless steel prices in the coming months if demand recovery does not keep pace.
China’s stainless steel production to remain elevated in the near term, but global oversupply risks persist. With demand recovery still uneven across regions, markets remain cautious.
