Australian Coal Exports Up Marginally in Jun’16

Australia, one of the largest coking coal exporters across the globe witnessed a marginal rise in its monthly coal exports during Jun’16 and stood at 32.9 MnT.

Australian coal exports — both metallurgical and thermal stood at 32.9 MnT in Jun’16 with a marginal increase by 0.4% compared to May’16. Meanwhile, monthly coal exports hit-9 month high in Jun’16.

While, yearly coal exports  also recorded a fall of 6% in Jun’16 from 35 MnT in Jun’15 as per the latest updates by Australian Bureau of Statistics.

For the first six months of the year (Jan’16-Jun’16), the country has shipped total quantity of around 190 MnT coal worldwide, up by 0.4% from 189 MnT at the same period last year.

Australian coal shipments have been rising constantly in 2016 on the wake of increased crude steel production and coal demand globally. Australian coal shipments have hit the highest since Sep’15. Collectively Coking coal prices are also hitting up in the global market as driven by sudden rise in Chinese coal demand. Current offers for premium coking coal is assessed at USD 116/MT, FoB for Sep’16 shipments.

However, Indian demand have also boosted due to rising crude steel capacity by Indian steel giants for the fiscal. Trade in Jun’16 reached at 4.7 MnT in India, the highest imports since Oct’16. India’s monthly average exports exceeding more than 4 MnT in the running year from 3.5 MnT in 2015 (Jan-Jun).

The country has been exporting more than 85% of coal to its top 5 export destinations every year such as Japan (33%), China (18%), Korea (16%), India (12%) and Taipei (8%).
