India: Hindustan Zinc initiates Debari smelter expansion project with new LP&C, jarosite facilities

  • New facilities to produce high-grade cathodes
  • LP&C unit set to have capacity of 250,000 TPA

Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL), a Vedanta Group company, has initiated a major expansion project at its Debari Smelter Complex in Rajasthan. As part of its strategic growth plans, the company will establish a 250,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) leaching, purification, and cellhouse (LP&C) facility and a 125,000 TPA jarosite circuit.

The upcoming facilities are designed to produce special high-grade zinc cathodes with 99.995% purity. The project aims to enhance HZL’s zinc production capacity and support the company’s long-term objective of strengthening its position in the global zinc market.

The engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) work for this expansion — valued within INR 2,500-5,000 crore — has been awarded to Larsen & Toubro’s minerals and metals division. The scope includes design, engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning of smelter units, along with utilities, effluent treatment systems (RO-ZLD), instrumentation, and automation infrastructure.

Larsen & Toubro, which has partnered with HZL for over three decades, brings prior experience in delivering beneficiation and smelter projects. The company’s minerals and metals vertical provides EPC services across mining and industrial sectors, supported by manufacturing units in Odisha and Tamil Nadu.
