Coal India Limited (CIL) has decided to ramp up Coking coal production in India, which is deficit in the coal variant.
In a latest development, the state-run mining major has revealed its plan to increase production of Coking coal by around 33%, or to 71.77 MnT, by FY20, aimed at lowering imports into the country. In FY16, production of the coal variant was at 53.8 MnT in India.
Due to the inadequate domestic supply of the coal variant, imports are depended upon to meet the demand. Australia is the most preferred region of import among the Indian buyers.
However, the planned initiative to increase Coking coal production in the country will not be instrumental in substantially curbing the imports due to low availability of the Metallurgical grade of Coking coal in the country.
