Indian Iron Ore Movement Falls by 10% in Jul’16

As per SteelMint’s analysis, iron ore movement across major producing states of the country was recorded at 8.24 MnT in Jul’16. On monthly basis, the figure has declined by 10% M-o-M as in Jun’16 it was assessed at 9.12 MnT. The figure has been compiled on the basis of movements made via railways, trucks, Karnataka e-auction data and import data as per customs. The figure indicated does not include the captive iron ore movement of SAIL & Tata Steel, movement from Goa and movement for exports.

State-wise iron ore movement analysis:

Odisha iron ore dispatches down by 8% – Iron ore dispatches from Odisha based mines was recorded at 4.68 MnT in Jun’16. However in Jul’16 the figure has fallen to 4.31 MnT. Thus recording a drop of 8% M-o-M.

Karnataka iron ore sales at 2.05 MnT – Iron ore sales via Karnataka e-auctions dropped by 22% M-o-M in Jul’16 from 2.63 MnT in Jun’16 to 2.05 MnT in Jul’16. Out of which 1.89 MnT iron ore was procured by within state based units. Major buyers were – JSW Steel (1.46 MnT) and BMM Ispat (0.11 MnT).

Iron ore movement from Chhattisgarh recorded at 1.3 MnT in Jul’16 – Vizag Steel sourced 0.39 MnT iron ore from NMDC’s Bailadila mines. While Essar Steel procured about 0.4 MnT iron ore via slurry pipeline and rakes from NMDC (C.G.), JSW Steel (Dolvi) procured 0.25 MnT iron ore via rake movement. Chhattisgarh based units sourced 0.20 MnT in Jul’16 from NMDC’s Bailadila mines in Chhattisgarh.

Iron ore imports increase in July – Iron ore imports to India were recorded at 0.33 MnT in Jul’16 compared to 0.17 MnT in Jun’16. Pellet imports to India remained nil in Jul’16. Amongst the major iron ore importers were JSW Steel (0.16 MnT). Other importers in Jul’16 were Goa Sponge & Power, Essar Steels and Welspun.

Indian iron ore export falls over monsoons – Iron ore export from India fell by 26% M-o-M from 0.74 MnT in Jun’16 to 0.55 MnT in Jul’16. Odisha’s merchant miner – Rungta Mines was the largest exporter at 0.2 MnT and NMDC’s iron ore export stood at 0.14 MnT. Indian pellet exports were recorded at 0.38 MnT in Jul’16 against 0.49 MnT in Jun’16.
