India: ECL sells over 40,000 t of non-coking coal in early Jul’25 auction

  • G4 records highest sales volume of 26,300 t
  • Shyam Steel, Ranisati Coal among top bidders

Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) sold around 40,700 t of non-coking coal in its e-auction held on 4 July 2025. The average auction price settled at INR 4,521/t, driven mainly by steady demand for high grades such as G3, G4, and G5.

Top buyers
Key buyers included Shyam Steel Manufacturing Ltd, which purchased 5,000 t at an average bid price of INR 4,084/t. Other active participants were Ranisati Coal Carriers, with 2,200 t; Mark Minerals Suppliers, with 2,000 t; Khatu Shyam Steels, with 1,500 t; and Niti Coal Merchants, which secured 1,200 t at the highest buyer-side average of INR 4,587/t.

Source mines
On the supply side, Jhanjra UG led with sales of 10,400 t at an average price of INR 4,442/t, followed by Kumardihi B UG with 8,000 t at INR 4,477/t. Chapapur OC contributed 7,200 t at INR 4,084/t, while Bansra UG fetched the highest mine-side average at INR 5,050/t on sales of 4,000 t. Other contributing mines included Chitra OC, Pandaveswar UG, and Central Kajora UG, with several smaller lots from Khottadih UG, Lower Kenda UG, and others.

Grade performance
Grade-wise, G4 saw the highest demand with total sales of 26,300 t, closing at an average price of INR 4,535/t. G3 recorded an average of INR 4,642/t on 7,200 t, reflecting strong buying interest. Meanwhile, 7,200 t of G5 were sold at INR 4,084/t.

These results highlight balanced demand across grades from industrial consumers and traders.

Market update
The auction highlighted stable demand for higher grades, with G3 and G4 maintaining premiums at around INR 4,500-5,050/t. Participation from both industrial consumers and traders underlines a balanced buying trend, even as overall volumes remained moderate compared to peak months. Buyers appear to be cautiously booking mid-to-high grades, adapting to local demand and supply dynamics.
