Australia’s Port Hedland Iron Ore Exports Fall by 7% in Jul’16

World’s largest bulk export terminal, Western Australia’s Port Hedland exported around 38.7 MnT iron ore in Jul’16.

The volume of exports from Port Hedland decreases by 7.4% M-o-M as compared to Jun’16 as it was 41.8 MnT. However, on Y-o-Y basis, exports rose by 9.6% in Jul’16 as it was 35.3 MnT in the same consecutive month last year.

In Jul’16, Port Hedland shipped around 89% share of iron ore to China. Exports to China was registered at 34.5 MnT. On M-o-M basis, exports to China increased by 9.1% as it was 31.6 MnT in Jun’16. On similar lines, iron ore exports to China incremented by 5.8% Y-o-Y.

Port Hedland has delivered a total throughput of around 446 MnT iron ore in 2015. BHP Billiton and FMG (Fortescue Metals Group) exports iron ore mainly from Australia’s Port Hedland, while Rio Tinto ships through Port Dampier. 

Overall iron ore export shipments from Port Hedland is expected to rise in coming months as the new Roy Hill mine developed by Gina Rinehart ramps up to full operating rates of around 55 MnT by the end of 2016.
