India’s total monthly coal imports registered a fall of 11% to 19 MnT in Jul’16 amid slowing demand in monsoon. While, Pet coke imports rose by 8% during the month.
Consecutively, since the beginning of FY17, India has been crossed coal imports mark of 20 MnT every month. But, for the first time in the fiscal, the mark had attained with a downfall of 11% in Jul’16 compared to Jun’16. Heavy rainfall resulted into slowing coal trade in India.
In the month of Jul’16, the country had imported about 19 MnT coal (pet coke included) with a notable fall of 2.3 MnT compared to Jun’16. In addition, total yearly coal import drop by 5.5% from 20.1 MnT in Jul’15.
As per SteelMint’s data analysis, out of the total import, the country imported 13.2 MnT non-coking coal, 4 MnT coking coal and about 0.34 MnT coke & anthracite in Jul’16. About 1.5 MnT Pet coke imported, majorly supplied by USA and Saudi Arabia.

Perhaps, there were several reasons behind fall in Indian coal imports in July. Rise in domestic availability along with running monsoon in India defer buyers for heavy purchases. Moreover, international coal market have gone up by 20% since Jun’16 on the wake of production cut in China and Indonesia collectively. While, coal buyers are on wait & watch mode as looking for further correction on international coal prices.
Major exporting countries to India in Jul’16
Indonesia, the biggest conventional source of the country, supplied about 8.9 MnT of coal; registered a downfall of 3% against Jul’16.
Moreover, India purchased most of its coal from major supplier countries such as Indonesia, Australia, South Africa, USA, Russia and Colombia.

Major discharging ports and importers in Jul’16
Mundra, India’s biggest ports in dry fuel handling, received the highest volume of 2.2 MnT with a fall of 8% M-o-M in Jul’16. Other ports of the country like Paradip, Krishnapatnam, Kandla and Vizag received 1.9 MnT, 1.7 MnT, 1.5 MnT and 1.2 MnT of coal respectively during the month.

Quantity in MnT
Indian companies like Adani Enterprises, Adani Power, SAIL, JSW Steel, Agarwal Coal, CGPL, Tata Steel, Bhushan Steel and Ultra tech Cement imported large quantities of about 1.8 MnT, 1.7 MnT, 1 MnT, 1 MnT, 0.7 MnT, 0.7 MnT, 0.6 MnT, 0.5 MnT and 0.4 MnT respectively in Jul’16.
