Coking Coal Imports in India Down by 7.3% in July’16 M-o-M

Coking coal imports into India was lower by 7.3% in July’16 against that in the previous month.

In July’16, the imports into the country were lower at 4.03 MnT in comparison with 4.35 MnT, imported in Jun’16.

Imports of the coal variant now depend on whether the Government of India will decide to continue imposition of the Minimum Import Price (MIP) on imports of a section of steel products, after the expiry of the MIP tenure on 5Aug’16. If continuation of the MIP is not done, imports of finished steel products will again rise, and domestic steel production will be hampered that will negatively impact Coking coal imports into the country.
