Standing Linkage Committee (SLC) of the ministry of coal has decided to withdraw the coal linkage issued to Vedanta Aluminum’s Coal based thermal power plant in Odisha’s Jharsuguda district, following the company’s decision to convert the IPP into Captive Power Plant (CPP).
Vedanta Aluminium has applied to the government for conversion of its 4×600 MW coal fired power plant from IPP (Independent Power Plant) to CPP. However, the Odisha Electricity Regulatory Commission had directed that 3 units have to be converted into CPP and one unit should be contacted to the state grid.
Later, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) recommended the ministry of power for considering conversion of two units (unit 3 & 4) to CPP, and the same recommendation was also accepted by the ministry of coal and directed Coal India to take steps to withdraw any linkages to the project. Subsequently in Apr’15, MCL has withdrawn coal linkage to unit 3 & 4 of power plant.
On the other hand, decision on conversion of unit-1 to CPP is still under examination with the ministry of power.
