India’s finished steel imports rose by 14.1% in May 2025 to 0.428 million tonnes (mnt) compared to 0.375 mnt in April, as per data from the Joint Plant Committee (JPC). This marks a 40.7% drop from 0.722 mnt recorded in May 2024.
Cumulative steel exports declined by 27.5% to 0.947 mnt in April-May 2025 compared to 1.307 mnt during the same period last year.
Finished steel exports fall 4.6% m-o-m
India’s finished steel exports fell by 4.6% to 0.391 mnt in May from 0.410 mnt in the previous month. Additionally, this marks a fall of 9.1% from 0.430 mnt in May 2024.
Finished steel exports declined by 18.1% to 0.766 mnt in April-May compared to 0.935 mnt in the same period last year.
Crude steel production increases 4.8% m-o-m
Crude steel production in May increased by 4.8% to 13.510 mnt from 12.895 mnt in the previous month. However, this was almost 9.5% higher than 12.342 mnt in May 2024.
In the April-May period, cumulative crude steel output increased by 7.6% to 26.406 mnt, compared to 24.550 mnt in the same period the previous year.
Finished steel production rises 5.5% m-o-m
India’s finished steel production rose by 5.5% in May to 13.151 mnt compared to 12.463 mnt in April, while it increased by 9.6% from 12 mnt in May 2024.
In April-May, cumulative finished steel production grew 7.4% to 25.613 mnt from 23.852 mnt during the same period in the previous year.
Finished steel consumption climbs up by 8.7% m-o-m
In May, finished steel consumption in India rose by 8.7% m-o-m to 13.077 mnt from 12.031 mnt in April. Meanwhile, consumption increased by 7.8% y-o-y from 12.126 mnt in May 2024.
Total finished steel consumption climbed up by 7% to 25.108 mnt in April-May from 23.475 mnt recorded during the same period in the previous year.
