CIL to Continue to Increase Coal Production; Aims Producing 598.61 MnT in FY17

Despite low off-take, Coal India Limited (CIL) continues to adhere to its plan of increasing coal production.

The state-run miner has set a coal production target of 598.61 MnT for FY17. Coal production by CIL will be higher by 11.11% in the current fiscal if the target is achieved against the production of 538.75 MnT, achieved in FY16.

In FY16, coal off-take was at 534.50 MnT against the production of 538.75MnT, according to a written reply by Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy, and Mines, to the Rajya Sabha. Moreover, coal imports in FY16 declined to 199.9 MnT from 217.8 MnT in FY15, according to the Minister.

During the first quarter of FY17, CIL produced 125.65 MnT of coal against the target of 132.43 MnT.
