Gabon to halt manganese ore exports by CY’29. How might it affect global market?

  • Move to support Gabonese domestic industry
  • Gabon was India’s 2nd-largest manganese ore supplier in CY’24

Gabon will halt the export of raw manganese from 1 January 2029 as part of a national strategy to strengthen local industry and reduce dependence on unprocessed mineral exports.

Leading miner Eramet acknowledges the Gabonese government’s decision to ban crude manganese exports stating, “The mining group, a key investor in Gabon for over 30 years, has consistently supported the nation’s economic development through sustainable mining operations, infrastructure investments, and the establishment of value-adding transformation facilities.”

As the primary co-shareholder in Comilog, Eramet reiterated its commitment to working collaboratively with the Gabonese authorities in a spirit of constructive partnership and mutual respect. While the company remains attentive to the policy shift, it aims to explore further opportunities to contribute to Gabon’s economic development, while ensuring the long-term sustainability of its mining and metals operations.

Eramet underscores the strategic importance of Comilog and Setrag, both essential suppliers of manganese to the global steel industry, sustaining over 10,000 Gabonese jobs. The group aims to safeguard its role in the international manganese market while supporting Gabon’s vision for industrial growth.

The company will continue discussions with the Gabonese government to align its operations with evolving policies and maintain a positive impact on the nation’s economy. Eramet’s long-standing presence in Gabon and its ongoing investments reflect its commitment to responsible resource transformation, reinforcing the company’s dedication to sustainable industrial development in the region.

What to expect in global supply dynamics? Gabon accounts for 15-20% share in overall global manganese ore seaborne exports. Eramet produced 6.8 mnt of manganese ore in CY’24, out of which external sales amounted for 5.5 mnt.

Impact on Indian market

India imported 6.21 mnt manganese ore in CY’24, as per data maintained with BigMint. South Africa was the largest supplier at 3.8 mnt followed by Gabon at 2.04 mnt. Thus, Gabon accounted for a share of over 30% in India’s overall imports last year.

Indian importers remain sceptical of Gabon’s 2029 export ban, calling it premature to comment at the moment. Some view it as a political move rather than policy prerogative, expecting no immediate disruption to manganese ore trade, sources informed BigMint.
