Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) has initiated to increase its capacity by deepening Mumbai harbor main navigational channel by cutting rocks through dredgers. Operations have already started and vessels have been advised not to traverse the main channel. All ships are advised to use deep water anchorages and to make arrangement to lighten their vessels at the P.L.A.
Mumbai port discharge operations will be resumed from 10 September onwards.
JNPT has said in a statement the entire dredging across the 34-km channel is expected to be completed within 25 months at about Rs 1,370 crore.
When this project will complete, it will widen the channel by up to 370 meters and deepen it up to 14-15 meters. This will allow ports to accommodate vessels with 6000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit) capacity.
Mumbai Port has long been the principal gateway to India and has played a pivotal role in the development of the national economy, trade & commerce and prosperity of Mumbai city in particular.
