India’s monthly coal imports remained flat at 21.3 MnT (Pet coke included) in Jun’16 as compared to last month. Indian buying interest slows down over ongoing monsoon.
India’s monthly coal imports stood at 21.3 MnT (Pet coke included) in Jun’16 with a marginal rise of 1% from last month. Coal imports were more or less same as that of May’16 amid sluggish demand and poor industrial growth during monsoon. Also, imports registered a yearly growth of 8% in Jun’16 as compared to 19.7 MnT in Jun’15.
As per SteelMint’s data analysis, the country imported total 15 MnT non-coking coal (down by 0.5% M-o-M), 4.3 MnT coking coal (up by 2.8% M-o-M) and around 0.5 MnT coke & anthracite in Jun’16.
Besides, Indian utilities have also imported 1.4 MnT Pet coke, highest ever since 2013; which was majorly supplied by the USA and Saudi Arabia.

Alike coal imports in Jun’16 and May’16 shows that the country is more focusing on domestic coal in the wake of higher trending international coal market and seasonal effect. Moreover, the rise in domestic supply by CIL coupled with slowing demand over ongoing monsoon made Indian buyers to go for only required shipments during the month.
It has been noted that, every year, India has been following a trend as the country imports less or alike coal quantity during June. Because having enough additional coal stock for monsoon which resulted in fall in June delivery.
Coal Imports in Q1 FY17
However in context to quarterly comparison, India’s coal import in the first quarter of FY17 witnessed a rise of 2% to 62.9 MnT compared to 61.7 MnT in Q1 FY16.
Major exporting countries to India in Jun’16
Indonesia, the biggest conventional source of coal to the country, supplied about 9 MnT of coal, registered a growth of 3% against May’16. Meanwhile, India purchases most of its coal from major supplier countries such as Indonesia, South Africa, Australia, USA, Colombia and Saudi Arabia.

Major discharging ports and importers in Jun’16
Mundra, India’s biggest ports of dry fuel handling, received the highest volume of 2.4 MnT with a fall of 7% in Jun’16. Other ports of the country like Kandla, Krishnapatnam, Paradip and Gangavaram emerged as the largest coal discharging ports.

Companies like Adani Enterprises (2 MnT), Adani Power (1.9 MnT), SAIL (1 MnT), JSW Energy (0.9 MnT), JSW Steel (0.8 MnT), Essar Steel (0.7 MnT), Tata Steel (0.6 MnT), CGPL (0.6 MnT) and Agarwal Coal (0.5 MnT) imported large coal quantities in Jun’16.
