Mongolian coal production drops over 6% m-o-m in March

  • Mongolian coal output drops to a new low since Aug’23
  • China sole buyer via three Inner Mongolian ports

Mysteel Global: Mongolia’s output of all types of coal in March settled at 6.35 million tonnes, dipping by 6.1% on month and by a significant 25.8% on year, new data released by the National Statistical Office of Mongolia (NSO) show.

This number penetrated the output level of 6.63 million tonnes recorded in January, representing a new low since August 2023.

In the first quarter, the country’s coal production had hovered at relatively low levels, with readings in all three months lower on a yearly basis, demonstrating a clear slowdown from record highs seen last year.

Mongolia’s accumulative coal output during January-March period reached 19.75 million tonnes, slumping by 12.4% from the year-ago level, Mysteel Global calculated according to the NSO data.

Specifically, 5.22 million tonnes of hard coal was produced in March, declining by 5.9% on month and 29.5% from last March respectively. The country’s brown coal output fell by 8.4% on month and by a moderate 1.4% on year to reach 1.13 million tonnes, another monthly report of NSO discloses.

China remained the sole destination for Mongolian coal exports this quarter, Mysteel Global notes. Ganqimaodu, Mandula and Ceke, all in North China’s Inner Mongolia, are the three main land border ports for Mongolian coal exports to China.
