Odisha – India’s largest iron ore producing state is likely to further ramp up its production by 32% Y-o-Y in FY17.
As per government data maintained with SteelMint, iron ore production in the state of Odisha was recorded at 75.7 MnT in FY16 registering growth of 61% Y-o-Y.
Odisha’s iron ore production fell drastically to 47 MnT in FY15 amid temporary suspension of mining operations in the state. However iron ore production moved up sharply in the last fiscal amid resumption of mining operations at suspended mining leases and enhanced production from existing mining leases.
In an interview with SteelMint, Mr. Deepak Mohanty (Director of Mines, Odisha) shared that “Odisha’s iron ore production may touch 100 MnT mark in this fiscal. Existing mining leases are ramping up their production and we are hopeful that Supreme Court may issue further directions on resumption of mining leases. All these will augment iron ore production in the state.”
Mine block auctions to further strengthen state’s ore production – Govt. of Odisha has successfully completed mine block auction of “Ghoraburhani Sagasahi iron ore block” which had total geological reserves of 99.59 MnT. State govt. is hopeful to put following more iron ore blocks namely – Kalmong west iron ore block, Medhamurani and Netraband under auction by Jan’17. This will further add to state’s ore production.
