India: Thermal coal inventories at ports inch up w-o-w

  • Inventories increase at Mangalore, Gopalpur, Vizag ports
  • Portside tags of South African coal show mixed trends w-o-w

Thermal coal inventories at Indian ports edged up by 0.2% w-o-w to 12.31 million tonnes (mnt) in week 14 of CY’25, from 12.29 mnt in the previous week, according to BigMint data. The minor increase was led by higher arrivals at some ports.

Key port inventory trends

Stocks at Mangalore rose 10.6% w-o-w to 0.84 mnt from 0.76 mnt, suggesting improved port arrivals.

Gangavaram’s inventory dropped sharply by 36.7% to 0.08 mnt, compared to 0.12 mnt last week.

Paradip’s stocks declined 6.7% w-o-w to 1.17 mnt from 1.26 mnt previously.

Gopalpur registered a 41.8% jump in inventory to 0.15 mnt, from 0.11 mnt last week.

Vizag’s stocks rose 18.1% w-o-w to 0.69 mnt from 0.59 mnt.

Mundra’s inventories declined 12.8% w-o-w to 0.95 mnt from 1.09 mnt, while Haldia registered a 14.5% fall to 0.40 mnt.

Company-wise inventory trends

Adani Enterprise’s portside inventory declined by 3.8% to 2.63 mnt from 2.73 mnt.

Agarwal Coal saw a marginal decline of 0.4%, with inventory at 1.10 mnt compared to 1.11 mnt last week.

Market overview

BigMint’s assessment of portside prices of South African thermal coal in India showed mixed trends w-o-w. RB2 (5500 NAR) prices remained unchanged w-o-w at INR 8,450/t exw at Gangavaram, while RB3 (4800 NAR) rose to INR 7,200/t exw. At Paradip, offers for RB2 were stable w-o-w at INR 8,500-8,600/t exw, and RB3 firmed up to INR 7,350/t. Exw-Vizag offers for RB2 were heard at INR 8,200-8,300/t.

Freights from the Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) to Paradip stood at $14.2/t, up by $0.6/t w-o-w. Vessel freights rose amid improved inquiries and increased fixtures.

Additionally, India’s coal imports from South Africa more than doubled in March, increasing 119% m-o-m to 3.46 mnt from 1.58 mnt in February.
