Japan Metal Daily: The Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) has announced a meeting with Japan’s steel and aluminium industries to discuss the implications of the US imposing additional tariffs on these products. The meeting, announced on 21 February by the Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry, Muto Yoshiharu, is scheduled to take place this week.
Implications of US tariffs
Invoking Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, the US has announced the implementation of a 25% tariff on steel and aluminium imports. The existing 10% tariff for aluminium has been raised to 25%, with the elimination of tariff-free quotas and exemptions for individual items. Furthermore, 167 steel and 123 aluminium derivative products will be subject to tariffs.
Industry response
Major steel and aluminium companies are expected to participate in the meeting, which will be held concurrently with a separate meeting with the automobile industry. The US has indicated its intention to impose tariffs on automobiles, prompting METI to engage with the industry.
METI’s take
Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Mr. Yoji Muto emphasised the importance of hearing from the Japanese industry and responding appropriately to the US tariff hikes. This meeting marks a crucial step in addressing the concerns of Japan’s steel and aluminium industries amid escalating trade tensions.
Outlook
Japan’s steel and aluminium sectors are bracing for significant change amid impending US tariffs. Coordinated responses and discussions are the primary focus as these industries navigate this critical period of negotiation, realignment, and adaptation, to maintain their global competitiveness under US tariff pressures.
