In May’16, China’s monthly coal imports registered a marginal growth of around 1%. Besides, the country’s yearly coal imports have also risen sharply in May’16.
China, the world’s largest coal importer, registered a rise of 1% in its monthly coal import during May’16. The country imported about 19.03 MnT of coal in the month with a growth of 0.3 MnT compared to Apr’16.
Chinese coal import seems volatile this year as it fluctuate consistently since the beginning of 2016. On the other side, imports witnessed some positive Y-o-Y growth in the month of May; noted a sharp rise by more than 45% growth on yearly basis.

Meanwhile, China’s total coal imports, including lignite, thermal and metallurgical coal, recorded a fall of 30% Y-o-Y in 2015. Fall in import was majorly driven by rising domestic coal production, which limited demand for imported coal.
In the 1st five months of 2016, the country’s coal import (coal and lignite) reached to about 86.2 MnT, reporting steep declination compared to the same period of 2015.
