Russia: Coal production dips in 2024 amid volatile global market dynamics, US sanctions

  • Steam coal output drops 5%, coking coal up 4% y-o-y
  • Overall coal production rises by 5.4% m-o-m in Dec

Mysteel Global: Russia’s coal production during 2024 totalled 427 million tonnes (mnt), lower by a tiny 0.6% compared with the previous year, latest data from the Russian State Statistics Service (Rosstat) show. The dip, the second in succession, was blamed on global coal-market fluctuations last year as well as the impact of escalated US sanctions on Russia’s coal industry.

By coal type, Russia produced 110 mnt of coking coal last year, higher by 3.7% y-o-y, while anthracite output fell by 13.6% from 2023 to 21.8 mnt.

Russia’s production of other hard coal, namely steam coal used for making cement and chemical products and generating power, declined by 4.7% to 197 mnt in 2024. Lignite output climbed up by 7.2% y-o-y to 98.6 mnt last year.

In December alone, Russia’s output of all types of coal came in at around 40.7 mnt, up 5.4% compared with November, according to Mysteel’s calculation based on the Rosstat data.
